Memory

Facts and decisions

Memory and pages are what your team understands, and they get rewritten as understanding improves. Two things shouldn't be:

  • A fact is what the source of truth told you - a client, a supplier, one of your own people speaking for the business. It carries who said it, when, and how they told you (meeting, email, call, message, their site, their document).
  • A decision is what someone with the authority decided, and why. An assumption you're working to is a decision you took, not a fact.

Neither can be quietly changed. A record is replaced (the source changed it, or you decided afresh) or corrected (you wrote it down wrong), and the history is kept either way. Your AI sees them before anything else: recall puts facts and decisions in their own block above the memories.

An open question is a fact you're still waiting for. Recording it means nobody guesses in the meantime, and answering it turns the same record into a fact.

Recording one

  • On screen - the Facts screen: Record fact, Ask and Record decision.
  • From your AI - record_fact, ask_question and record_decision. A fact needs the source's words, who, when and how. If your AI doesn't know something, it should ask a question rather than record a guess.
  • From the CLI - kythe facts add, kythe ask and kythe decide. See the CLI reference.

Back a record with evidence where you can: a note, page or file in the workspace, or a web address.

Asking and answering

An open question names who has to answer and the question word for word. Nothing is sent to them - it records that you're waiting. Mark it asked once it's gone, and answer it when they reply (answer_question, kythe answer, or Answer on screen). The question is kept on the fact it became.

Replacing and correcting

The situationDo thisWhat happens
The source changed what they said, or you decided afreshReplace (replace_record, kythe replace)The old record is kept, marked Replaced and linked to the new one. Your AI sees only the new one
You wrote it down wrongCorrect (correct_record, kythe correct)The record is fixed in place and marked Corrected, with what was wrong. Every earlier version is kept

Only whoever recorded a settled fact or a decision, or a workspace admin, can correct or delete it. An open question's wording and who it's for can be changed by anyone who can write, since nothing has been claimed yet.

Workspace, project and area

A record applies to a project, or to the whole workspace when it has none. A project's view includes the workspace-wide records, flagged as such. An area names the part of the work a record is about, and you can filter by it.

Finding them

The Facts screen lists them by tab - facts, open questions and decisions - and filters by project and area. Your AI checks with list_facts and get_record, or kythe facts and kythe fact <id>, before it asks a client something you may already know.
